Overview

The KB Electronics KBPB “Cycler” control is designed to provide anti-plug “instant” reversing, solid state dynamic braking and rapid cycling for PM and shunt wound DC motors through 3 HP. It combines all the features of the KBMM speed control with the features of the KB APRM, with contact arcing eliminated since the APRM allows armature switching to take place only when current levels are near zero.

Two models are offered: the KBPB-125 operates on 115 VAC with 0-90 VDC motors, while the KBPB-225 operates on 230 VAC with 0-180 VDC motors. The KBPB contains a built-in barrier terminal block, and its compact size makes the control ideal for installation where space is at a premium.

Key Features

All models are equipped with KB’s exclusive Plug-in Horsepower Resistor, which eliminates the need to recalibrate IR Comp and Current Limit when the control is used on motors of different horsepower. The basic ratings of the controls can be enhanced with the addition of KB’s Auxiliary Heat Sink. The controls also contain Inhibit, which allows electronic switching of the armature voltage, and Auto Inhibit, which provides rapid, safe switching of the AC line.

The controls can be used to drive all PM and shunt wound DC motors from 0 to full speed using three separate methods: a 5K remote speed pot, an auxiliary speed pot via the S4 terminal, or voltage following. When operated in voltage following mode, an isolated analog signal (0-9 VDC) is applied to input terminals P2 (+) and F (-). Adjustment trimpots are provided for Min, Max, IR Comp, CL, Accel and Decel.

Reversing And Cycling Performance

The KBPB’s combination of the KBMM speed control and the patented KB APRM module makes it particularly well suited to applications requiring frequent direction changes and rapid run-brake cycling. The control is rated for up to 10 starts, stops or reversals per minute based on a one second brake time — for increased cycling rates or longer brake times, the factory should be contacted directly.

Accessories

As with other KB DC motor controls, the armature fuse and Plug-in Horsepower Resistor are supplied separately and must be matched to the connected motor’s horsepower and armature voltage range. The optional Auxiliary Heat Sink extends the control’s rating, increasing the KBPB-125 to 1.5 HP and the KBPB-225 to 3 HP. CE compliance additionally requires the KBRF-200A RFI filter.
