Overview

The KB Electronics KBMD-240D Multi-Drive represents the latest in state-of-the-art design for variable speed DC motor controls. It is rugged and compact in size, and is able to handle both 115 and 230 VAC line inputs by setting the built-in Dual Voltage Switch. The single model can be used across a wide range of motors by selecting and inserting the appropriate Plug-in Horsepower Resistor.

The standard KBMD-240D controls motors through 3/4 HP at 115V and 1.5 HP at 230V. By installing the optional KB Auxiliary Heatsink, the horsepower range is increased to 1 HP at 115V and 2 HP at 230V. The versatility of the control is further enhanced with the optional Forward-Brake-Reverse Switch Kit.

Key Features

The electronics for the Multi-Drive consist of KB’s patented KBMM speed control module, with field-proven reliability confirmed by over 100,000 controls presently in operation. Unlike other inexpensive drives, the KBMM module is housed in a rugged metal enclosure rather than plastic. Keyhole slots facilitate mounting, while a readily accessible terminal block simplifies wiring. A detailed instruction and user manual is included with each control.

Standard features include the Plug-in Horsepower Resistor for use across a wide range of motors, the Dual Voltage Switch for selecting 115 or 230V AC line operation, a built-in AC line fuse, MOV transient protection rated at 20 Joules, and trimpot adjustments for Min, Max, IR Comp, Current Limit, Accel and Decel. The control also incorporates a patented overload circuit and a CL LED indicator for diagnostic feedback.

Drive Options

The optional Auxiliary Heatsink (P/N SC-9861) extends the control’s rating to 1 HP at 115V and 2 HP at 230V. The optional Forward-Brake-Reverse Switch (P/N SC-9860) includes the switch and a prewired dynamic brake resistor, providing motor reversing and braking functions for applications that require it.

Accessories

As with other KB DC motor controls, a correctly matched Plug-in Horsepower Resistor must be selected and inserted based on the connected motor’s horsepower and armature voltage range. The armature fuse is customer supplied, while the AC line fuse is built into the control. CE compliance additionally requires the KBRF-200A RFI filter.

Common Applications

The KBMD-240D Multi-Drive is used across a range of industrial applications, including conveyors, packaging machines, feeders and printing equipment, wherever a compact, dual-voltage and rugged metal-enclosed DC motor speed control is required.

Selection Considerations

Because the KBMD-240D handles both 115 and 230 VAC supply through the built-in Dual Voltage Switch, the primary consideration is confirming the connected motor’s armature voltage — 90-130 VDC for the 115V setting, or 180 VDC for the 230V setting — and selecting the correct Plug-in Horsepower Resistor to match the motor’s horsepower. Applications exceeding the standard rating should consider the optional Auxiliary Heatsink, and applications requiring reversing or braking should consider the optional Forward-Brake-Reverse Switch Kit.

Motordrives Australia can help confirm the right Plug-in Horsepower Resistor and any required accessories based on your motor’s horsepower, voltage and current rating.
