Overview
The KB Electronics KBAC Series is a Hybrid Drive that combines a digital AC drive with a simple analog interface, designed to provide variable speed control of three-phase AC motors without requiring programming or commissioning. The drive is housed in a rugged die-cast aluminium NEMA 4X / IP 65 enclosure with a hinged cover, making it suited to indoor or outdoor installation, including wash-down and more demanding environments.
The KBAC range spans six models across single and three-phase input configurations: the KBAC-24D and KBAC-27D operate from a 115/230 VAC single-phase supply, the KBAC-29 is available in both single-phase (1P) and three-phase 230 VAC versions, and the KBAC-45 and KBAC-48 operate from a 460 VAC three-phase supply. Horsepower ratings across the range run from 1/8 HP through to 5 HP, with all models delivering a three-phase output and jumper selectable horsepower settings. Gray and white case finishes are available, with the white case carrying an FDA approved finish for food and washdown applications.
Key Features
The KBAC Series uses sensorless flux vector control with static auto-tune to provide strong speed regulation and smooth motor torque across the full speed range, with automatic energy saving at light loads. Electronic Inrush Current Limit (EICL) protection eliminates harmful inrush current at power up, while ride-through provides smooth recovery to the previous set speed after a momentary power loss.
Diagnostic LED status indicators give an at-a-glance view of power and status conditions. Protective features include undervoltage and overvoltage protection, short circuit protection at the motor, stalled motor trip protection, and regeneration protection to prevent nuisance tripping caused by rapid deceleration of high inertial loads. A Run/Fault relay output can be used to signal equipment status, warnings or fault conditions, and the drive provides holding torque at zero speed to resist motor shaft rotation when stopped.
Basic, programmable trimpot adjustments are provided for minimum speed, maximum speed, acceleration, deceleration, current limit and slip compensation.
Drive Options
A range of drive options can be added to the KBAC Series, including an On/Off AC line switch to disconnect the AC line, a Forward-Stop-Reverse switch for motor reversing and stop functions, and a Run-Stop-Jog switch to select the speed setting from either the main speed potentiometer or the JOG trimpot. A Signal Isolator provides isolation between a non-isolated signal source and the drive, and can be paired with an Auto/Manual switch to select between a remote process signal and the main speed potentiometer. A Class A (CE) RFI filter can be installed inside the drive, and liquidtight fittings are available as a kit for sealing drive wiring in wet or washdown environments.
Customisation For OEMs
KB Electronics can work with OEMs to provide a custom KBAC drive solution that is ready to use “out-of-the-box.” Customisation options include pre-calibrating or pre-programming a stock control, adding a custom label or branding, custom software, PLC functions or designing a new control. GFCI software is also available with factory programming, allowing the equipment to operate with Ground Fault Circuit Interruption breakers or outlets.
Common Applications
The KBAC Series Hybrid Drive is used across a wide range of industrial, indoor and outdoor applications, including conveyors, pumps, blowers, fans, packaging and food processing equipment, HVAC systems, machine tools, mixers, indexers, door and gate openers, dumbwaiters, and other equipment that benefits from controlled motor speed, soft start torque and a washdown-capable enclosure.
Selection Considerations
Selecting the correct KBAC model starts with confirming the available supply: single-phase or three-phase, and the supply voltage of 115, 230 or 460 VAC. From there, the required horsepower and output amperage determine the specific model within that voltage and phase configuration. Installations in wet, outdoor or food-processing environments should also consider the white, FDA-approved case finish together with the optional liquidtight fittings kit.
Motordrives Australia can help confirm the right KBAC model based on your motor’s horsepower, the available supply voltage and phase, and the installation environment.
