Overview
The Bosch Rexroth EFC 3610 and EFC 5610 are economical, easy-to-use frequency converters for electronic speed and torque control, designed to help reduce energy costs and CO2 emissions by matching motor output to actual load demand. The EFC 3610 is a universal, low-cost converter for reliable speed control and demand-oriented energy supply, while the EFC 5610 extends the power range up to 90 kW (125 hp) and adds efficient vector control for an optimum torque curve and high starting torque.
Both series share a common platform with harmonized parameters, expansion options through I/O and fieldbus modules, an integrated control panel with parameter copy function, and a standard on-board Modbus interface for networking. For safety-relevant applications, the EFC 5610 is available with a Safe Torque Off (STO) option up to Cat. 4/PL e, SIL3 safety levels.
Key Features
Both converters include an integrated, detachable operator panel with a memory function for fast parameter transfer and commissioning, diagnostic LEDs for operation without the panel fitted, and a 5-digit 7-segment LED display (with an optional LCD display). Standard functionality includes a built-in sequence control with 16 steps, switchover between two parameter sets, an integrated PID controller, pump operation with protective idle-mode function, ride-through for short-term power failures, and an integrated energy counter.
The EFC 3610 uses V/f control, while the EFC 5610 adds Field Oriented Control (FOC) and Sensorless Vector Control (SVC), enabling an optimum start-up torque of 200% at 0.5 Hz and the ability to operate permanent magnet motors. Both series include a built-in brake chopper (up to 22 kW/30 hp) and integrated mains filter, removing the need for external components in most installations, plus motor temperature monitoring and a freely definable V/f curve (linear or quadratic) for further energy savings and longer motor life.
Connectivity
Both the EFC 3610 and EFC 5610 offer extensive connectivity, with an on-board Modbus interface as standard and optional expansion to PROFIBUS, CANopen or a Multi-Ethernet interface supporting Sercos, PROFINET, EtherCAT, EtherNet/IP and Modbus/TCP. An Open Core Interface (OCI for Drives) allows the converters to be controlled from a range of programming languages via available libraries, supporting integration into Industry 4.0 machine concepts. Pluggable I/O connection terminals simplify installation and wiring.
EFC 3610 vs EFC 5610
The EFC 3610 is positioned as the energy-efficient solution for general industry segments, including pumps, compressors, fans, woodworking machines, food and beverage manufacturing, paper processing, textile machines, environmental systems and packaging machines. The EFC 5610 is the high-torque solution for more demanding requirements such as logistics and material transport, conveyors, roller tables, mixers, agitators, centrifuges, building material machinery, plastic processing and machine tools, and supports side-by-side mounting up to 22 kW (30 hp) along with flexible expandability through application-specific firmware (ASF).
Common Applications
These converters are used across a wide range of industrial applications, including pumps, compressors, fans, conveyors, mixers, packaging machines, woodworking equipment, food and beverage processing lines, and machine tools, wherever variable speed AC motor control is needed to improve energy efficiency and process control.
Selection Considerations
Selecting between the EFC 3610 and EFC 5610 depends primarily on the required power rating, torque performance and control sophistication. The EFC 3610 suits general-purpose speed control applications up to 22 kW (30 hp), while the EFC 5610 should be specified for higher power requirements up to 90 kW (125 hp), permanent magnet motor operation, vector control performance, or where Safe Torque Off functionality is required for safety-rated machinery.
